Before we dive in

Pokémon GO uses real-world exploration to find Pokémon. Eggs hatch after you place them in an Incubator and walk the required distance; different Egg groups have different possible Pokémon.

A Shiny Pokémon has an alternate colour scheme. An increased Shiny chance improves the odds but does not guarantee a particular hatch, so an event bonus is an opportunity rather than a promise.

The update

Sandile gets a turn in the Pokémon GO spotlight on October 17. The official event announcement confirms a six-hour window, boosted hatching chances and bonuses for taking those Eggs for a walk.

The official window is 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 17. Sandile appears more frequently in 2 km Eggs, with an increased Shiny chance. Bonuses include double hatch Candy, half hatch distance and a greater chance of receiving 2 km Eggs from PokéStops.

Free Timed Research awards an Incubator and XP. Optional paid research is listed at US$1.99 or the local equivalent and adds a quarter-distance bonus, with availability varying by region. Complete the research and claim rewards by 5:00 p.m. local time. The listed distance and Candy bonuses do not stack with other event or GO Pass bonuses.
